General Job Description

Public Health nursing is a synthesis of nursing education and social and public health sciences designed to promote and protect the health of individuals, families, and populations. Assessment and analysis of health status is supplemented by hea! lth promotion, health maintenance, health education, service c! oordination, and continuity of care activities in accordance with group or individual needs. The Public Health Nurse develops essential and holistic public health services based on the core functions of assessment, policy development and assurance. Particular emphasis is placed on working with communities to develop and implement emergency preparedness measures to respond to potential bioterrorism events as well as natural disasters. This level differs from lower level nursing classes in its breadth of programmatic involvement, in its focus primarily on populations or groups, and in its delivery of services in a wide variety of clinical, school and community settings. Incumbents are assigned to local offices and perform their duties with significant independence under the general supervision of a Public Health Nurse III or the District Director. All employees of the Agency of Human Services perform their respective functions adhering to four key practices: customer service,! holistic service, strengths-based relationships and results orientation.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from an accredited school.
Experience: None.
Note: College seniors in the final semester of a BSN program will be considered for this position. Graduation from the BSN program must occur prior to hire and continued employment will be contingent on the employee passing the Nursing Licensure Exam (NCLEX).
OR
Education: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing supplemented by a Bachelor's degree, preferably in the social sciences or humanities.
Experience: One year as a registered nurse in a community health setting or two years as a registered nurse in a hospital, clinic, school or physician's office which has included a sig! nificant component of obstetric, infant, or pediatric preventive practi! ce.
Special Requirement: Must either possess an active license as a Registered Professional Nurse or be eligible for a temporary license and be eligible to practice in Vermont.
NOTE: A new graduate who has not yet taken the Nursing Licensure Exam (NCLEX) must provide a letter acknowledging proper application and fee for NCLEX.
Note: A community health setting includes Health Departments, VNA, Home Health Agencies, Occupational Health Nursing, or School Nursing.
